About Wolf River Veterinary Clinic

Our History

The Wolf River Veterinary Clinic was founded in 1996 by Dr. Jim Ziegler. The original intent was for the clinic to be a small branch office to the Dairyland Animal Health Veterinary Clinic in Weyauwega where Dr. Ziegler was a partner.

Surprisingly, after eighteen months of very slow business, the clinics accountant advised Dr. Ziegler to close the clinic down, and focus his energy elsewhere. However, at that time Dr Ziegler was becoming involved in the community, and his children were attending New London schools. Determined to see his commitment through, Dr. Ziegler gave up his partnership in Weyauwega and became the sole owner of the Wolf River Veterinary Clinic.

Shortly after that, the clinic grew to the point of needing to expand, and the clinic doubled in size with a 2000 square foot addition, giving the clinic enough space to "carry me to retirement" according to Dr. Ziegler. Within three years, however, the clinic was in desperate need of more room, and an 1800 square foot expansion was planned and built, ultimately giving the clinic five exam rooms, a new surgery, a designated room for dental procedures, more office space, and more kennel space.

Since then, the clinic has focused on upgrading its services, adding digital radiology, laser surgery, laser therapy, ultrasound, as well as expanding services such as animal homeopathy and chiropractic care, and select orthopedic surgery. The clinic also offers basic canine reproductive services.

Currently, the clinic has three veterinarians, three certified veterinary technicians, four receptionist, two veterinary assistants, two office managers, and a crew of four who maintain the kennel wards. Read Staff Bios.

While the clinic has evolved immensely since its inception, it continues to change as veterinary medicine advances. Every year, there are many changes in the profession, and the clinic strives to keep abreast of these changes, the clinic looks forward to the future, and wants to play a vital role in the new New London community, as well as the surrounding areas. It is our goal to always represent a high standard of care for pets, and to continually be an advocate for both pets and people.

SAFE Pet Adoption - Pet of the Month

"Feb Pet of the Month-Lexy"

Many times, when we recognize a pet of the month, we are, in fact, recognizing an owner who has shown an unusual level of commitment to their pet.  I have always said that dogs and cats do not walk into the clinic alone.  It takes a caring owner for them to receive the care they need.

This month I would like to recognize Lexi and her owners.  Lexi is a thirteen year old Pomeranian who was diagnosed with diabetes awhile back.  Lexi did not respond to insulin at all, and it was discovered that she had another hormonal disorder called Cushings disease.  This makes it almost impossible to regulate a diabetic on insulin.  Not giving up, the owners treated the Cushings, Lexi regulated well on insulin, and all was fine for awhile.

Lexi got very ill one weekend, however, and it was discovered that she was anemic, had a severe reproductive infection, a urinary tract infection, bladder stones and kidney stones.  At her age, few owners would have been willing to invest a lot in her care, but her owners were not deterred. Lexi had emergency surgery to spay her and remove the bladder stones.  She was treated with antibiotics, hospitalized on IV fluids, and ultimately received a blood transfusion.  Being a tough little dog, she gradually rebounded, and was sent home where she continues to do well.

Lexi is a nice little dog whom we all enjoy.  Her opportunity at life, however, is the result of a great deal of love and care on the part of her owners.  My hat goes off to them all.
